Mumbai: FDA Cracks Down on Food Vendors in Dharavi and Ghatkopar for Safety Violations

Mumbai, 2nd June 2025: Mumbai’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken stringent action against two food business operators—Kirankart Technologies Pvt. Ltd. (Zepto) in Dharavi and M/s Khushi Trading in Ghatkopar—for serious breaches of food safety regulations.
Following a surprise inspection, the FDA suspended the license of Kirankart Technologies in Dharavi. The inspection, conducted by Food Safety Officer Ram Bodke, revealed moldy food items, stagnant water near storage areas, unsanitary floors, improper cold storage practices, and expired products stored alongside fresh food. Some items were even placed directly on the ground in a disorganized manner.
Assistant Commissioner Anupama Patil immediately ordered suspension of the company’s license under the Food Safety and Standards Act until full compliance is ensured and verified by the licensing authority.
In a separate inspection at M/s Khushi Trading, located in Kojimajini Estate, Ghatkopar West, officials discovered that the vendor was operating without a valid FSSAI license. The premises were unclean, food items were of poor quality and incorrect branding, and expired products were allegedly purchased from various shops for resale. Food Safety Officer Abhinandan Ranadive ordered the business to stop operations on May 22.
However, a follow-up inspection on May 29 revealed that Khushi Trading had resumed business illegally. Consequently, an FIR was filed at the Ghatkopar police station.
These actions were led by Food Safety Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar and Joint Commissioner Mangesh Mane. Officials have issued a strong warning to all food businesses to adhere strictly to food safety rules. Non-compliance will result in immediate and severe legal consequences.
The FDA has reiterated that consumer health cannot be compromised and that surprise inspections will continue to ensure food safety across the city.
