Mumbai IPS Officer Sudhakar Pathare Dies in Road Accident in Telangana

Mumbai, 29th March 2025: Mumbai Police’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Port Zone, IPS Sudhakar Pathare, has died in a tragic road accident in Telangana. Pathare was traveling from Srisailam to Nagarkurnool when his car collided with a bus, resulting in his death on the spot. His relative, who was accompanying him, also lost his life in the accident.

The Maharashtra Police has been deeply saddened by the loss of the 2011 batch IPS officer. Telangana Police has informed Mumbai Police about the incident.

Vaibhav Gaikwad, SP, Karnool, said, “Both individuals were traveling to Shrishailam in an Innova car when, around 1200 hrs in the ghat section, their car was struck by an ST bus. Neither of them were wearing seat belts. Sudhakar Pathare sustained a head injury, while Bhagwat Khodake suffered leg and internal injuries. Both were declared dead upon arrival at a private hospital. The post-mortem is currently in progress.”

Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar tweeted, “Mumbai Police is deeply saddened to announce the untimely demise of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sudhakar Pathare in a tragic road accident near Hyderabad today. DCP Pathare was a dedicated officer who served the force with commitment and integrity. His contributions in maintaining law and order in Mumbai Port Zone and earlier in Navi Mumbai were invaluable, and his loss leaves a profound void in our ranks. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. The Mumbai Police Force stands together in mourning the loss of one of its finest officers. We pray the departed soul rests in peace.”

Hailing from Walwane village in Parner taluka, Ahmednagar district, Pathare had an impressive career spanning multiple government departments before joining the police force.

He earned an M.Sc. in Agriculture and an LLB before entering the administrative services.
In 1995, he became a District Special Auditor, followed by his selection as a Class 1 Sales Tax Officer in 1996.
His policing career began in 1998 as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP).
Over the years, he served as DySP in Pandharpur, Akluj, Kolhapur City, and Rajura.
He held senior roles as Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Chandrapur and Vasai and as Superintendent of Police (SP) in CID Amravati.

His extensive service also included postings as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Vashi, Navi Mumbai, and Thane City.

A Policeman Known for His Tough Stance Against Crime
IPS Sudhakar Pathare was known for his strong action against organized crime, including measures under MOCCA (Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act), MPDA (Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act), and anti-smuggling operations. Apart from maintaining law and order, he played a crucial role in several community policing initiatives and modernizing police operations.

His untimely demise has left the Maharashtra Police Department in shock and grief, with colleagues and officials mourning the loss of a dedicated and dynamic officer.

Mumbai Police expressed deep grief over the sudden demise of Pathare, highlighting his commitment and integrity in maintaining law and order in the Mumbai Port Zone and his previous assignments. His contributions to the force were described as invaluable, leaving a significant void in the ranks.

The incident occurred shortly after Pathare’s visit to Hyderabad for a training session. Details regarding the cause of the accident are yet to be confirmed. Further investigations are underway.
