Mumbai Local Trains to Run Every Two Minutes as Railways Plans Kavach 5.0 Rollout

Mumbai, 30th July 2026: In a major step towards improving Mumbai’s suburban railway network, Indian Railways is preparing to introduce Kavach 5.0, an advanced indigenous train protection system designed specifically for Mumbai’s high-density local train operations.

The new system is expected to reduce the gap between consecutive local trains from the current three minutes to just two minutes, allowing railway authorities to increase the number of daily suburban services from 3,254 to nearly 4,000. The move is expected to provide significant relief to the millions of commuters who depend on Mumbai’s local train network every day.

Currently, Mumbai’s Central and Western Railway suburban corridors together carry approximately 6.5 to 6.8 million passengers daily. Of the existing services, Central Railway operates around 1,840 local trains, while Western Railway runs approximately 1,414 services.

What is Kavach 5.0?

Kavach 5.0 is an upgraded Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system developed to enhance railway safety and operational efficiency. The system is designed to:

– Prevent trains from crossing signals at danger (SPAD).
– Detect and control overspeeding.
– Automatically apply emergency brakes when necessary.
– Prevent collisions between trains.
– Provide cab-based signalling, enabling safe operations even during heavy rain, fog, or poor visibility.

By reducing the minimum safe distance between trains while maintaining safety standards, the technology will enable more frequent suburban services on the existing railway infrastructure.

Designed for Mumbai’s Suburban Network

Unlike Kavach 4.0, which was developed primarily for long-distance rail routes, Kavach 5.0 has been specially designed to meet the operational requirements of Mumbai’s busy suburban railway system.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had announced the development of the new system in April 2025. The technology is currently undergoing testing by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). Following successful trials, it will be implemented in phases across Mumbai’s suburban railway network.

The introduction of Kavach 5.0 is expected to improve passenger safety, increase train frequency, and strengthen the overall efficiency of one of the world’s busiest suburban railway systems.
