Mumbai: Proposal To Convert Local Freight Coach Into Senior Citizen Coach Faces Strong Opposition From Mumbai Dabewala Association
Mumbai, 20th July 2023: The Western and Central Railways are currently considering a proposal to convert one of the local freight coaches into a dedicated senior citizen coach. However, this move has been met with strong opposition from the Mumbai Dabewala Association, citing potential strain on other coaches. The association demands that any decision regarding this matter should not be taken without thorough consultation with them.
The proposed plan aims to reserve one of the existing freight coaches in 12 and 14-coach local trains for senior citizens. The intention is to provide a more comfortable and convenient travel experience for elderly passengers. However, the Mumbai Dabewala Association has expressed concerns that such a decision could lead to congestion and other possible disputes in the general coaches.
The Mumbai Dabewalas, famous for their precise planning and timely meal deliveries, play a vital role in ensuring that the working class receives hot, home-cooked meals promptly during the afternoon. Their efficient allocation of coaches has garnered them worldwide fame.
Currently, a standard 12-coach local train has four freight coaches, while a 14-coach train contains five freight coaches. If one of these freight coaches is reserved for senior citizens, the remaining general coaches would likely experience increased pressure and overcrowding during peak hours.
Addressing the matter, Mr. Subhash Talekar, President of the Mumbai Dabewala Association, emphasised that the railway administration should ponder over the issue before taking any decision. He urged the authorities to engage in meaningful discussions with their association to find an amicable solution that benefits all stakeholders.
Furthermore, the association has been persistently requesting the addition of freight coaches to air-conditioned locals for several years. Talekar hopes that a positive decision on this long-standing demand will also be taken quickly.
