Mumbai Rain Deluge Creates Unlikely Fountain on Chandivali Farm Road, Video Goes Viral

Mumbai, August 5, 2024: Heavy rains have inundated Mumbai, leading to submerged streets, traffic congestion, and hazardous driving conditions. Amid the chaos, a viral video has emerged showing what seems to be a spontaneous fountain erupting from the middle of Chandivali Farm Road in Powai.

Shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user Jake Joss, the 35-second clip captures a powerful surge of water shooting up from the road’s surface. The footage shows vehicles cautiously navigating around the unexpected water burst, with water splashing across the road as cars, buses, and autorickshaws manoeuvre through the flooded area.

The video’s caption read: “#MumbaiRains always brings surprises like these. Fountain in the middle of #ChandivaliFarmRoad at #Powai.”

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) clarified that the water fountain effect was a result of routine maintenance. “The water jet was part of the flushing process for the water main pipeline. Thank you for your engagement!” responded the official Ward-L BMC account.

The video has since attracted over 100,000 views and sparked a flurry of humorous comments from viewers.

One user joked, “The monsoon truly changes the city in unexpected ways. Hope everyone stays safe and dry amid these surprises. #MumbaiMonsoon #EverydayAdventure.”

Another commented, “Someone should give that fountaineer an award. How did he pull that off?”

A different reaction read, “From tomorrow, someone will probably start a car wash service right there.”

The humour continued, with one user noting, “Natural fountain in the middle of a road—miracles of Mumbai.”

Another added, “Wow, new Mumbai attraction! Must visit,” while another quipped, “Mumbai Beautification Project Fountain in the middle of Chandivali Farm Road at Powai—My BMC, beautiful BMC.”

One viewer offered a practical explanation, stating, “That’s a stormwater drain; the lid gave way due to the heavy rainfall below the road. This happens at Peddar Road during rains sometimes.”

On Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai, warning of severe weather. Earlier, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Mumbai had issued a yellow alert, predicting heavy rains in several areas over the next 24 hours. Residents have been advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
