Mumbai: Security Guard Arrested for Harassing Minor Girl in Vile Parle

Mumbai, 18th May 2025: A 53-year-old security guard was arrested by the Vile Parle police on Friday night for allegedly harassing a 16-year-old girl by handing her a note with his mobile number and asking her to call him. The incident took place around 8 p.m. on Friday in a residential society where the victim resides.
According to the police, the accused approached the college-going minor when she was alone. He reportedly chased her and waited until she reached the exit gate of the society. Finding no one around, the accused handed her a note saying, “Call me. I want to talk to you,” and walked away. The note contained his name and mobile number.
Shocked and frightened by the incident, the girl informed her family, who accompanied her to the Vile Parle police station to file a complaint. Acting swiftly, the police registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code related to molestation. A police team arrested the accused from the area around midnight.
“The girl was terrified by the accused’s behavior. Given the sensitivity and gravity of the situation, we acted immediately,” a police official stated. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
The incident comes amid rising concerns over the safety of minors in Mumbai. In 2024, the city recorded 1,341 cases under the POCSO Act, including 609 rapes and 667 molestation cases. Detection rates for such crimes have slightly declined — from 99% in 2023 to 96% in 2024. The detection rate for molestation cases has also dropped from 100% to 97%, and for obscene acts from 96% to 91%.
Authorities have emphasized the need for heightened vigilance and community awareness to prevent such crimes.
