Mumbai: Tragic Loss as Three Railway Staff Members Lose Lives in Vasai Track Incident

Vasai, 23rd January 2024: In an incident near Vasai in Palghar district, three dedicated railway staff members lost their lives while working on tracks. The unfortunate event occurred at 8.55 pm on Monday between Vasai Road and Naigaon Stations when the employees were run over by a local train headed towards Churchgate.

The victims, identified as Chief Signalling Inspector Vasu Mitra, Electrical Signalling Maintainer Somnath Uttam Lambutre, and Helper Sachin Wankhade, were part of the signalling department of the Mumbai division, as stated by Western Railways. They were addressing signalling point issues when the incident unfolded, leading to their immediate demise at 20.55 hrs.

Following the tragic incident, the Divisional Railway Manager and other senior railway officials promptly reached the site to assist the families of the deceased. An immediate relief amount of ₹55,000 each has been disbursed to the victims’ families, with further ex gratia payments and additional disbursements scheduled within 15 days.

The families of Sachin Wankhede and Somnath are expected to receive around Rs. 40 lakhs, while Vasu Mitra’s family is set to receive approximately Rs. 1.24 crores. The Western Railway expressed its commitment to conducting a thorough inquiry into the incident and assured settlement dues to be provided to the families of the deceased employees.
