Mumbai: Western Railway Collects Rs 117.54 Crore in Fines from Ticketless Travelers

Mumbai, 7th February 2025: Western Railway (WR) has intensified its ticket-checking efforts across Mumbai’s suburban local trains, Mail/Express services, passenger trains, and holiday specials to curb ticketless and irregular travel. Between April 2024 and January 2025, these operations resulted in the recovery of ₹117.54 crore in fines, with ₹38.10 crore coming from the Mumbai Suburban section.

Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of WR, reported that in January alone, authorities detected 2.24 lakh cases of ticketless or irregular travel, including unbooked luggage violations, leading to ₹13.08 crore in fines. Of this, ₹4.13 crore was collected from approximately 98,000 offenders on the Mumbai Suburban network.

To address unauthorised travel in AC local trains, WR has also conducted frequent surprise inspections. These checks led to penalties for nearly 52,000 passengers between April 2024 and January 2025, generating ₹1.72 crore in fines.
