Mumbai’s Metro 6 Project Gains Momentum with Acquisition of 108 Metro Train Coaches by MMRDA

Mumbai, 13th June 2023: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken a significant step towards the development of the ‘Swami Samarth Nagar – Vikhroli Metro 6’ route by deciding to procure 108 metro train coaches. The MMRDA has issued a tender worth Rs 989 crore for the purchase of these coaches.

The Metro 6 project holds immense importance as it aims to connect the western and eastern suburbs, spanning a distance of 15.31 km. With 13 metro stations planned along the route, the project’s estimated cost is around Rs 6,672 crores. MMRDA has set a target to operationalize this route by the year 2025. Notably, the contentious issue of the car shed associated with this route has also been resolved, and tenders for its construction will be invited shortly. In order to meet the scheduled deadline for making this route operational, essential tasks such as the procurement of metro trains and conducting their testing must be completed.

To fulfill this requirement, MMRDA has recently initiated the process of procuring 108 metro coaches specifically for the ‘Metro 6’ project. The chosen contractor will be responsible for constructing the containers, supplying them, conducting the necessary testing, and providing the requisite training to the concerned employees.

This development reflects MMRDA’s commitment to the timely execution of the project, ensuring the provision of efficient and reliable metro services to the residents of Mumbai. The acquisition of metro train coaches marks a significant milestone in the advancement of the ‘Swami Samarth Nagar – Vikhroli Metro 6’ route and brings it closer to its eventual inauguration.
