Navi Mumbai: Communal Tensions Erupt in Navi Mumbai Over Diwali Decorations at Taloja Society
Navi Mumbai, 31st October 2024: In the festive spirit of Diwali, celebrated nationwide, an incident of alleged communal discord has emerged at a Navi Mumbai society regarding the decoration of public areas with lights. Videos capturing members from two communities in heated discussions have gone viral. This incident reportedly took place at Panchanand Society in Taloja Sector 9, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.
The dispute is said to have started when Muslim residents allegedly opposed the use of Diwali lights in the society’s shared spaces and roads. In the videos, both groups are heard using offensive language as tensions appear to rise.
At one point, residents in the video seemed aware that the situation had taken on a communal tone.
Why Did Some Residents Oppose Diwali Lights in Navi Mumbai?
Reportedly, Hindu residents had previously objected to the presence of goats within the society premises for Bakri Eid in June, possibly prompting the recent opposition to Diwali lighting by some Muslim residents.
In a June meeting, members of the Panchanand Society had reportedly agreed that no festivals or cultural activities would take place in common areas. Citing this agreement, the Muslim residents have requested that the society office bearers uphold the decision made earlier in June 2024.
