Navi Mumbai Policeman Faces Legal Action for Alleged Role in Wife’s Suicide

Navi Mumbai, 14th May 2024: Authorities in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, have initiated legal action against a 37-year-old policeman accused of aiding the suicide of his wife, as reported on Sunday.

The victim, aged 31, had married the accused, a CISF sub-inspector residing in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, on November 30, 2014. The couple shared two sons, aged 7 and 3, according to officials.

Allegations surfaced suggesting that the accused subjected his wife to physical abuse and pressured her for financial support, including investments in shares based on his advice, resulting in losses. He purportedly shifted blame onto her for the financial downturn. Additionally, the accused demanded ownership of land and control over her bank accounts, threatening divorce if his demands were not met, as per a complaint filed by the victim’s brother, stated Senior Inspector Rajeev Shejwal of Kharghar police station.

Tragically, on May 3, 2024, the woman reportedly took her own life by hanging herself from the ceiling of her residence. Initially treated as an accidental death, further investigation prompted authorities to register a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused on Friday. The charges include sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
