Navi Mumbai Resident Loses Rs 46 Lakh to Fraudulent Mumbai Cyber Police Impostors

Navi Mumbai, 20th April 2024: A resident of Nerul, Navi Mumbai, aged 47, fell victim to a fraudulent scheme orchestrated by individuals masquerading as Mumbai cyber police officers. These impostors coerced him into transferring a substantial sum of Rs 46 lakh under the pretext of averting fabricated charges of money laundering and drug-related offenses, as reported by the police on Friday.

The authorities responded swiftly, initiating legal action by registering a case under Section 420 (cheating) and relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act against four suspects. According to the victim’s account, the perpetrators, using WhatsApp as their primary mode of communication, impersonated Mumbai cyber police officials and issued threats of legal action.

Over a period spanning from April 10 to 15, the victim succumbed to their demands and transferred the aforementioned sum to various bank accounts as instructed. Despite the severity of the situation, no arrests have been made as of yet, but investigations are underway to apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice.
