Navi Mumbai: Scammers Steal Rs 20,000 Without OTP

Navi Mumbai, 22nd December 2022: A woman alleged that she has been cheated of Rs 20,000 in an online fraud, despite never giving her One Time Password (OTP) to anyone. A case has been registered in this regard at Vashi Police Station and the Cyber Cell is investigating.

The complainant, Rina Panda, lives in Dombivli and has an interior exhibition business in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. In the month of July, she had ordered some clothes worth Rs 840 from an online site. As soon as she received these clothes, she immediately paid money to the merchant. However, as the products were not in order, she went to the site and demanded a return, and sent an email asking for the refund to be deposited into her bank account. But as the money did not come, she filed a complaint to the consumer court.

Following these events, a person identifying himself as Rohit Khanna and claiming to be from Ajio customer service contacted her. Rina informed him of the missing 840 rupees. Rohit sent her a link and asked her to open it, but Rina refused. Finally she opened the ICICI app as he asked and went to the cardless cash withdrawal option and wrote ‘20,000 rscrefund’ and clicked.

Within some time an amount of Rs 20,000 was transferred from Rina’s account. When she called Rohit again about this, he claimed that there was a system problem and that the amount would be credited back to her account after a while. However after that neither the amount was credited nor did Rohit pick up the phone.

After finally realising that she was cheated, she registered a case of fraud against the person who gave his name as Rohit. Interestingly, the complainant asserted that she never gave anybody her OTP number. It has been mentioned in the FIR as well. The cyber cell is investigating how such a fraud could be committed without OTP.
