Navi Mumbai to Expand Green Belt by 40 Hectares Under NMMC’s Eco Initiative

Navi Mumbai, 4th March 2025: Renowned for its structured urban planning and lush landscapes, Navi Mumbai is gearing up to expand its green spaces by 40 hectares. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has introduced a series of environmental initiatives, including large-scale tree and bamboo plantations, alongside the creation of botanical and butterfly gardens as part of its 2025-26 development strategy.

To support these eco-friendly measures, the civic body has allocated ₹74 crore, focusing on planting indigenous tree species along city roads, open areas, and the NMMC-owned Morbe Dam. Municipal commissioner Kailas Shinde, who also leads the Tree Authority, announced that under the Majhi Vasundhara campaign, 45,000 trees will be planted across the city in the coming year at an estimated cost of ₹10 crore. Major green belt projects are planned for Ghansoli, Digha, and the Thane-Belapur Road, significantly enhancing Navi Mumbai’s tree cover.

“Our priority is to plant native species that contribute to biodiversity and create natural habitats for birds and animals,” said Shinde. “This effort will not only increase green cover but also help in reducing pollution and improving the city’s air quality.”

To further strengthen its environmental initiatives, NMMC has planned extensive bamboo plantations, with 33,000 bamboo saplings to be planted along the perimeter of Morbe Dam and an additional 3,000 around the fenced areas of the Turbhe landfill site.

Beyond tree plantations, the NMMC is focusing on park development and enhancement. A botanical garden, estimated at ₹8 crore, will be established in the undeveloped section of Nisarga Udyan at Kopar Khairane. “This botanical garden will serve as both a tourist attraction and an educational hub for students,” said Shinde. “It will feature plants that attract butterflies, bees, and other pollinators, helping sustain urban biodiversity.”

A structured conservation plan has also been introduced to maintain and upgrade the city’s 197 parks, 252 road dividers, tree belts, and open spaces. The initiative includes landscaping improvements, architectural and electrical upgrades, and reinforced security measures. Protective fencing and shade nets will be installed to safeguard tree belts and nurseries.

Additionally, NMMC plans to enhance facilities in civic parks by upgrading playgrounds, benches, open gyms, recreation centers, drinking water stations, toilets, and gazebos. To foster environmental awareness, the city will also organize a special exhibition featuring various trees, flowers, fruits, and vegetables, encouraging public participation in afforestation efforts.
