Navi Mumbai to Use Tertiary Treated Water for Construction Amid Water Crisis

Navi Mumbai, 13th February 2025: In a major initiative for water conservation, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has mandated the use of tertiary-treated recycled water in construction projects. This move is intended to ease the pressure on potable water supplies, which are facing increasing strain due to declining rainfall and rising demand.

At present, the city operates seven Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) utilizing Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) technology to treat wastewater. To enhance the reuse of treated water, NMMC has established Tertiary Treatment Plants (TTPs) in Koparkhairane and Airoli as part of the central government’s AMRUT Mission. An NMMC official explained that these plants employ Ultra-Filtration and Ultraviolet-Based Technology to further purify secondary treated water.

Currently, tertiary treated water is supplied to industries in the TTC Industrial Area, managed by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), for non-potable purposes. However, redevelopment projects and private land development in Navi Mumbai continue to rely on drinking water, increasing the risk of shortages.

To counter this challenge, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has instructed that all approved construction projects must exclusively use tertiary treated water. NMMC is actively monitoring compliance among developers to ensure sustainable urban growth while preserving the city’s drinking water resources.

With rapid urbanization and the growing impact of climate change on water availability, this policy marks a vital step toward responsible water management, aligning infrastructure expansion with environmental sustainability.
