Pimpri Chinchwad, 13th March 2024: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has completed the first phase of the biomining project in the Moshi wasteland. About 70% of the biomining process for the eight lakh square meters of old waste has been accomplished. The second phase will cover an additional 15 lakh square meters of waste, ultimately clearing 25 acres of the Moshi wasteland. The reclaimed land will be repurposed for solid waste management activities and urban development projects.

Pimpri-Chinchwad generates 1,200 tons of garbage daily, which is processed at the Moshi landfill. With 23 lakh square meters of old dumped waste on 25 acres of land, PCMC initiated the biomining of old waste. The RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) cement produced during biomining is supplied to construction companies, while the bio soil is used for agriculture and gardening. The excavated dirt will be utilized for levelling low-lying areas.

‘Biomining’ is a scientific method involving the excavation, segregation, recycling, and processing of solid waste using natural elements like air and sunlight. Over time, the biological waste decomposes, and the non-degradable waste, containing valuable metals, gains value.

The benefits of biomining include its eco-friendly approach to recycling land covered with old waste, resource recovery from useful elements, and a reduction in soil pollution. Additionally, RDF waste obtained from biomining can enhance soil fertility or serve as fertilizer for horticulture, contributing to groundwater cleanliness.

Vijaykumar Khorate, Additional Commissioner, stated that biomining represents a significant step toward environmental revival. Upon completion of the project, 30 years’ worth of accumulated waste will be scientifically decomposed, providing 25 acres of land for future solid waste management projects after the second phase of biomining.
