Residents of Cidco’s Kharghar Sector-36 Housing Scheme Struggle with Sewage Water Overflow

Mumbai, 9th April 2024: In Navi Mumbai’s sector-36, Kharghar, numerous residents of Cidco’s Swapnapoorti mass housing scheme have been grappling with sewage water overflow caused by a clogged pipeline, leading to significant inconvenience for both residents and locals from adjacent areas, including another Cidco mass housing complex. With 58 buildings in the scheme, comprising 36 seven-story and 22 fourteen-story structures, the scale of the issue is considerable.

A concerned social activist has urged Cidco to intervene, highlighting the persistent problem that has plagued the housing complex for months. Despite efforts to address the issue internally, including attempts to form a cooperative housing society (CHS), differences of opinion among residents have hindered progress, exacerbating the situation. The problem has escalated to the extent that even the power supply to the complex was temporarily cut off by MSEDCL due to outstanding dues.

The issue of sewage water overflowing onto the main road, particularly from the L-2 building area, has been a longstanding concern, especially during the monsoon season. This not only inconveniences residents and visitors but also poses health risks due to the formation of stagnant water, which serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Activist Nandu Warungase has raised the alarm, alerting authorities, including CM Eknath Shinde, about the dire situation and its adverse effects on public health. The residents, frustrated with the lack of resolution, have expressed reluctance to pay maintenance fees to Cidco until all their grievances are adequately addressed.

In response, Cidco’s Kharghar node executive engineer NB Kulkarni has stated that while the road falls under the jurisdiction of the Panvel City Municipal Corporation, internal issues within the housing complex are being actively addressed by another executive engineer. However, it remains imperative for swift and effective action to be taken to resolve the ongoing sewage water overflow and alleviate the plight of the affected residents.
