Shama Mohamed vs. Kangana Ranaut: Political Row Escalates Over Rohit Sharma’s Body-Shaming Comments
New Delhi, 4th March 2025: Congress national spokesperson Shama Mohamed has found herself at the center of controversy after calling Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma “fat.” Facing backlash over her remarks, she has responded by highlighting an old social media post by Bollywood actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, in which Ranaut allegedly used derogatory language against cricketers.
In a post captioned, “What does @mansukhmandviya have to say to @KanganaTeam! #JustAsking,” Shama Mohamed called out Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who had earlier criticized her comments on Rohit Sharma’s fitness.
Mandaviya, expressing his strong disapproval, stated that sports personalities should be left alone as they are capable of managing their professional careers. He further condemned the remarks made by political figures, labeling them as “shameful” and an insult to the dedication and sacrifices of athletes who represent India on global platforms.
In response to Mandaviya’s statement, Shama Mohamed shared a screenshot of Kangana Ranaut’s old post directed at Rohit Sharma in 2021. The post was in reaction to a tweet by Sharma during the farmers’ protest, where he had emphasized the importance of unity in finding solutions. Ranaut’s response, which allegedly contained offensive language, has now resurfaced as part of the political exchange.
The controversy erupted after Shama Mohamed, in a now-deleted social media post, commented on Rohit Sharma’s physique, stating that he was “fat for a sportsman” and needed to lose weight. She also questioned his leadership abilities, calling him “the most unimpressive captain India has ever had.”
Additionally, she compared Sharma with past Indian cricket team captains, suggesting he was a “mediocre player” who was fortunate to secure the captaincy.
Her remarks sparked strong criticism from BJP leaders and members of the cricketing community. The Congress party distanced itself from her statements, instructing her to delete the posts.
