Structural Audit of 27 Flyovers in Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai Announced by MSRDC
Mumbai, 13th November 2023: Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has unveiled plans to conduct a comprehensive structural audit of 27 flyovers spanning Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai (MMR Region- Mumbai Metropolitan Region). The audit will be executed in collaboration with the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and the process is expected to commence next month. Following the assessment, necessary repair work will be initiated based on the recommendations provided in the audit report.
In 1996, MSRDC took the initiative to alleviate traffic congestion in the Mumbai metropolitan region by deciding to construct 55 flyovers. As part of this plan, a total of 27 flyovers, 4 subways, 1 railway overbridge, 1 bay bridge, and 4 junctions were constructed, totaling 37 bridges. MSRDC asserts that all these structures, including bridges and underpasses, are presently in good condition. Any required repairs will be addressed after the structural audit.
The structural inspection, to be conducted by IITs, aims to assess the need for repairs by examining factors such as load capacity, bearing condition, and overall strength of the bridges. The MSRDC official confirmed that the cost, timeline, and initiation of the repair work will be determined soon after discussions between MSRDC and IITs are finalized.

The initial phase will involve a preliminary inspection of the 27 bridges to identify those requiring priority structural audits. Ongoing discussions between MSRDC and IITs will soon finalize the decision, paving the way for the commencement of the audit work next month. Traffic management considerations are also under discussion due to the anticipated traffic block during the audit process. The MSRDC official assured that repairs will be promptly carried out based on the recommendations provided in the audit report.
