Thane: Building Collapse in Bhiwandi: Six Rescued from Unsafe Structure

Thane, 15th May 2024: In Bhiwandi town of Maharashtra’s Thane district, a segment of a two-storey building, previously marked as ‘unsafe’, collapsed, as reported by civic authorities on Wednesday.

Following the incident that occurred around 10 pm on Tuesday, six individuals were safely rescued from the premises, according to Raju Warlikar, head of the disaster management cell at the Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation.

Situated within the Bhandari compound and comprising 15 units, the building had been officially deemed hazardous and unsuitable for occupancy. The building’s owner had been duly instructed to ensure its evacuation.

Despite these warnings, several individuals had sought shelter on the first floor on Tuesday night, only for the staircase on the second floor to collapse unexpectedly.

Upon receiving the alert, local fire personnel and disaster management teams swiftly responded to the scene. Civic Commissioner Ajay Vaidya supervised the rescue operations.

After the collapse, the remaining portion of the staircase was dismantled, and plans were made to initiate the demolition of the entire building on Wednesday, as confirmed by Warlikar.

Warlikar emphasized the municipality’s stringent directives to evacuate and demolish hazardous structures before the monsoon season, reaffirming their commitment to adhering to these protocols in this particular case as well.
