“Transgenders Can Apply For Police Constable Posts”: Maharashtra Government Tells Bombay High Court

Mumbai, 10th December 2022: On Friday (December 9), the Maharashtra Government informed the Bombay High Court that it will permit transgender people to apply for police constable positions during the ongoing state-wide recruitment process. The government also added that it would establish guidelines stating requirements for physical testing by February 2023.

On Thursday (December 8), the HC warned the government that it would halt the entire hiring process and noted that the State was behind in formulating regulations for establishing conditions for their hiring procedure.

Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni told a division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Abhay Ahuja that the government would amend its website giving an option for the third category when filling out the online application form.

The government has stated that while its teams are uniformly made up of men and women for a group activity, it will only permit transgender people to seek the position of “Constable Driver” during this recruitment process. Additionally, the government has extended the deadline for submitting applications until December 15.
