Viral Video of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ Chant in Mumbai Metro Sparks Debate Over Public Nuisance

Mumbai, 16th October 2024: A video of a group of youngsters chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ in a Mumbai Metro coach has gone viral, sparking criticism from social media users who deemed it a public disturbance.

In the footage, several young people, dressed in dandiya and traditional attire, are seen taking over an entire Metro coach, with some even seated on the floor. They can be seen clapping and loudly singing the chant, followed by a Gujarati song towards the end of the video.

The clip, which has garnered nearly a million views, has divided opinions online. While some argued that loud singing in a public transport setting constitutes a disturbance, others saw it as a spirited Navratri celebration by a group of youths.

One user commented, “Respecting all religions is essential. Creating a nuisance in public spaces is unacceptable in a civilized society.”

Another added, “Imagine if people from other religions did this – what would the reaction be? Don’t tarnish the Hindu faith by disrupting others in the name of religion.”

A third user remarked, “It doesn’t matter if it’s Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, or Christian music—such activities are prohibited in metros. Rules and regulations are being ignored.”

Some even tagged Mumbai Police, calling for the group to be arrested for causing a public nuisance. “They should face consequences for this,” read one comment.

Others expressed their frustration with the behaviour. “If only this crowd paid as much attention to civic sense and cleanliness. Sadly, that’s rare,” said one user.

Another remarked, “What madness is this? How is it allowed? Trains, metros, airports—they’ve all turned into dandiya venues. It’s forced entertainment for those who want no part of it.”
