Mumbai’s Iconic ‘Van Rani’ Mini Train Set to Return After Four-Year Hiatus

Mumbai, 19th July 2025: After a long wait of four years, Mumbai’s cherished mini toy train “Van Rani” (Queen of the Jungle) is ready to make a grand comeback at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), promising a nostalgic and eco-friendly experience for city dwellers and tourists alike.
First introduced in 1974, the miniature train had been a beloved feature of SGNP, entertaining generations of children, families, and nature lovers. However, operations were suspended in 2021 after Cyclone Tauktae inflicted significant damage on the track and surrounding infrastructure. Now, thanks to a large-scale redevelopment initiative, the train is poised to return in a renewed avatar.
A Joint Effort to Revive a City Treasure
The revival project is being spearheaded by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, with vital support from the Ministry of Railways. The initiative is part of a broader push to strengthen urban eco-tourism and promote environmental education.
Key Highlights of the New Van Rani Experience:
– Completely Relayed Track: The 2.3-kilometre-long railway has undergone a full overhaul, including the reconstruction of all 15 bridges along the route to ensure rider safety and comfort.
– Modern Coaches and Successful Trial Runs: A brand-new train unit has joined the SGNP fleet. Following successful trial runs on June 30 and a full-capacity test on July 5, the train is ready to carry passengers once again.
– Upgraded Stations:
– Krishnagiri Station now features a revamped building, platform, and accessibility ramps.
– Teenmurthy Station has completed its platform work, with the new station shed expected to be finished by July 25.
– Enhanced Passenger Experience: The updated ride will feature educational wildlife panels, stunning views of the Deer Park, and a scenic journey through SGNP’s lush forests—offering an enriching blend of fun and learning.
Expected Launch: End of July 2025
The relaunch of Van Rani is not just a return of a recreational ride but a symbolic restoration of a cultural gem. The Forest Department is preparing to welcome thousands of eager visitors who remember the train fondly—and many more who will experience it for the first time.
With upgraded infrastructure and a renewed purpose, the Van Rani is set to become a beacon of environmental awareness and a joyful escape in the heart of the metropolis.
