Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Achieves Major Milestone with Launch of Final 1,640-Tonne Portal Beam in Ahmedabad
Mumbai/Ahmedabad, 10th July 2026: The Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project has completed the launching of all 13 heavy portal beams in Ahmedabad with the successful installation of the final and heaviest portal beam at Sabarmati, marking a key construction milestone for India’s first high-speed rail corridor.
The final precast-prestressed portal beam, weighing approximately 1,640 metric tonnes, is the heaviest among the 13 portal beams erected in Ahmedabad. The beam measures 34.5 metres in length and has a 5.5-metre × 4.5-metre cross-section. The launching operation was completed in around three hours.
The 18-km-long Bullet Train viaduct in Ahmedabad passes over several existing railway corridors. To facilitate these crossings, a total of 13 portal beams were constructed, including five over the Mumbai–Ahmedabad main railway line at Maninagar, seven over the Mumbai–Ahmedabad main railway line at Vatva, and one over the Ahmedabad–Delhi main railway line at Sabarmati.
The final beam was launched using a 2,200-metric-tonne crawler crane. The operation was carried out in a restricted work area under planned safety procedures and in coordination with Indian Railways to ensure that train services on the existing railway lines continued without disruption during the lifting process.
The portal beams form part of the elevated viaduct structure being built for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor. With the installation of the final beam at Sabarmati, all planned heavy portal beam launches in Ahmedabad have now been completed.
