Pune: PCB Flags 100 Camp Buildings as Unsafe, Asks Owners to Vacate and Carry Out Redevelopment

Pune, 22nd July 2026: Nearly 100 decades-old buildings in Pune Cantonment have been declared structurally unsafe following a survey, prompting the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) to direct property owners to vacate the premises and submit redevelopment plans.

The unsafe buildings are located in Camp’s older localities, including Dastur Meher Road, Sachapir Street, Bacchu Adda, Old Modikhana and surrounding lanes. PCB officials warned that the weakened structures pose a serious risk to residents and pedestrians, particularly during the monsoon.

Notices have been issued asking owners to vacate the buildings and submit redevelopment proposals. They will be held responsible if any untoward incident occurs, an official said. The move aims to ensure residents no longer live in hazardous structures.

According to PCB officials, around 260 old buildings were surveyed, with nearly 100 found unfit for habitation. Most of the structures are built using mud, mortar and timber.

Residents and activists, however, accused the board of repeatedly issuing notices every monsoon without taking concrete action. They said only a handful of buildings had been redeveloped or repaired over the past five years, while most continue to remain in a precarious condition.

Officials said redevelopment has been stalled largely due to landlord-tenant disputes. Many occupants continue to live under legacy tenancy agreements, paying rents of just Rs 2 to Rs 10 a month, while redevelopment would require them to pay market-linked rents, making the proposals difficult to implement.
