Pune: Daily Garbage Littering at Kolsa Galli in Camp Raises Hygiene Concerns; Residents Demand Organised Waste Management

Camp, 22nd July 2026: Residents of Kolsa Galli, a historic by-lane off Mahatma Gandhi (MG) Road in Camp, have raised serious concerns over the daily accumulation of garbage on the streets during the early morning hours, urging the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) to implement a more organised waste management system.
According to residents, the lane is routinely littered with garbage between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., when people come out for their morning walks, shopkeepers begin opening their establishments, and visitors start arriving. They say the garbage remains scattered across the road during these hours, creating unhygienic conditions and leaving a poor impression on one of Camp’s most prominent heritage localities.
Kolsa Galli is one of Camp’s oldest commercial lanes, known for its long-standing glass shops, photo frame businesses, and traditional establishments. Camp itself is renowned for its colonial-era heritage buildings, iconic Irani cafés, Parsi restaurants, traditional bakeries, and bustling shopping streets, attracting visitors from across Pune every day. Residents say the recurring garbage problem tarnishes the image of this historic neighbourhood.
While acknowledging that the Adar Poonawalla Clean City Initiative assists in cleaning the area, residents stressed that garbage should not remain on the streets during the morning hours. They have urged the Pune Cantonment Board to strengthen its sanitation system by ensuring timely garbage collection and regular monitoring.
Residents also demanded that the PCB install public dustbins at strategic locations across Kolsa Galli and the MG Road area. They said the lack of adequate waste disposal facilities encourages people to dump garbage on the roadside. According to locals, installing sufficient dustbins and ensuring they are emptied regularly would discourage littering and significantly improve cleanliness in the heritage precinct.
Daisey Dorabjee, resident, said:
“Every morning between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., when residents come out for their morning walk, the entire street is covered with garbage. Kolsa Galli is part of Camp’s heritage and many people visit this area every day. The roads should be clean before the day begins. We also request the Pune Cantonment Board to install public dustbins at different locations in Kolsa Galli and the MG Road area so people have a proper place to dispose of their waste instead of throwing it on the roads.”
Another resident said:
“This has become a daily issue. Residents, visitors and shopkeepers have to walk through garbage before it is cleared. The Pune Cantonment Board should improve the waste collection schedule and place more public dustbins in the area. Proper planning and regular monitoring will help keep Kolsa Galli clean throughout the day.”
Responding to the concerns, Pune Cantonment Board CEO Vidyadhar Vasudeo Pawar said the Board has its own dedicated sanitation organisation responsible for maintaining cleanliness across the cantonment area.
“The Pune Cantonment Board has a dedicated cleanliness organisation that regularly carries out sanitation work. The Adar Poonawalla Clean City Initiative supports our efforts, but it is not solely responsible for waste management. We have our own teams working regularly. I will look into this issue, gather the necessary information and ensure appropriate action is taken,” said Vidyadhar Vasudeo Pawar, CEO, Pune Cantonment Board.
