Matheran Emerges as Top Holiday Destination; Toy Train Ridership Surges

Mumbai, 29th April 2024: Matheran has solidified its position as a premier holiday destination in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with toy train services witnessing a remarkable surge in popularity.

A senior official revealed on Sunday that the toy trains ferried a staggering 5 lakh passengers during the 2023-24 period, generating revenue exceeding Rs 3.5 crore.

The resurgence in tourism is evident from the robust performance of the toy train services, which surpassed pre-pandemic figures. In comparison to the 2.7 lakh passengers and Rs 1.5 crore revenue recorded in 2019-20, the recent numbers reflect a significant uptick in tourism activity.

Following the disruptions caused by the Covid pandemic, the toy train services from Neral to Matheran were temporarily halted. However, operations resumed from Neral station in October 2022, gradually gaining momentum since April 2023.

Currently, Central Railway (CR) operates four daily services between Neral-Matheran-Neral and 16 services between Aman Lodge-Matheran-Aman Lodge. Among these, 12 services operate daily, with an additional four special services exclusively on weekends (Saturday and Sunday).

Of the 5 lakh passengers transported, approximately 3.75 lakh traveled between Aman Lodge and Matheran, while 1.25 lakh passengers commuted between Neral and Matheran during the 2023-24 period. Revenue analysis indicates that Rs 2.48 crore was generated from the Aman Lodge-Matheran route, while Rs 1.06 crore was earned from the Neral-Matheran route.

In response to the burgeoning tourist influx, plans are underway to introduce sleeping pods, commonly known as pod hotels, in Matheran. The contract for the development and operation of the Pod Hotel has been awarded through e-auction. Tourists will enjoy flexible booking options, allowing reservations both at the reception and online via a dedicated mobile app.

CR chief spokesperson Swapnil Nila emphasized that the introduction of sleeping pods aims to enhance the overall tourist experience while fostering economic growth by stimulating tourism and creating employment opportunities.

Established 117 years ago, the Neral-Matheran Toy Train stands as one of India’s few Heritage Mountain Railways, offering passengers a captivating journey amidst nature’s pristine beauty.
