Mumbai: CCTV Footage Reveals Chaos Before Bandra Terminus Stampede Injuring 10

Mumbai, 31st October 2024: Days after a stampede at Bandra Terminus railway station in Mumbai resulted in 10 injuries, CCTV footage has surfaced showing passengers pushing and shoving to board an unreserved train moments prior, leading to chaos on the platform.

The incident occurred as large crowds attempted to board the 22-coach Bandra-Gorakhpur Antyodaya Express, which arrived from the railway yard around 2:44 a.m. on Sunday. Such overcrowding is typical during the festive season.

The security footage, reportedly from a CCTV camera located at the north end of platform 1, reveals passengers struggling to maintain their balance while trying to board the train. The video captures a surge of people attempting to enter the train before it fully stops, with some even trying to squeeze through an emergency exit window. However, the footage does not depict the actual stampede.

In response to the festive rush, Western Railway has scheduled over 130 special trains to various destinations, particularly targeting passengers traveling to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar for the upcoming Diwali and Chhath festivals.

To alleviate platform congestion and facilitate smoother passenger flow, platform ticket sales have been limited at several key stations, including Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra Terminus, Borivali, Vasai Road, Vapi, Valsad, Udhna, and Surat within the Mumbai Division.

Furthermore, the Northern Railways has advised travelers to arrive at least one hour before their train’s scheduled departure to avoid last-minute crowding and ensure a seamless boarding experience.
