Mumbai Family Grapples with Dual Losses: Nephew Drowns, Uncle Commits Suicide

Mumbai, 23rd April 2024: A tragic incident unfolded near Govandi when a 25-year-old man, Shailesh Shegokar, reportedly took his own life by jumping in front of a moving train. This devastating event occurred just hours after his six-year-old nephew tragically drowned in a pit outside the Mankhurd railway station on Sunday.

According to authorities, Shegokar resided in Mahatma Phule Nagar, Mankhurd, with his brother’s family. The sequence of events began when his nephew, Aayush, requested his uncle’s phone to play a game. However, Shegokar declined the request, prompting the child to go out to play. Tragically, Aayush drowned in a pit near the railway station around 11:30 am.

The pit, reportedly dug up for construction work by the Mumbai Railway Development Corporation, contained water and posed a hazard to unsuspecting individuals. Engineer Kartik Samanta and supervisor Dipesh Mahtre were arrested for alleged negligence in ensuring safety measures during the construction work, leading to the tragic accident.

In the wake of Aayush’s untimely death, Shegokar blamed himself, expressing profound regret to his relatives, lamenting that the tragedy could have been prevented had he yielded to his nephew’s request for the phone.

As authorities investigated the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death, another heartbreaking development unfolded. Shegokar was discovered to have taken his own life by jumping in front of a train near Govandi railway station later that evening.

The Vashi Government Railway Police (GRP) initiated an investigation into the suicide, which led to the identification of Shegokar’s body by his grieving family members. Overwhelmed by guilt and grief, Shegokar’s tragic demise underscores the profound impact of the earlier loss on his emotional well-being.

While the investigation into these distressing events continues, the authorities are left grappling with the heartbreaking aftermath of a family shattered by two devastating losses within a span of hours.
