Mumbai Police Constable Succumbs to Injuries After Horrific Assault

Mumbai, 2nd May 2024: A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday as a constable assigned to the Worli Local Arms division-3 of Mumbai Police lost his life after a harrowing ordeal. Constable Vishal Pawar, a resident of Thane, succumbed to his injuries in a city hospital after battling for three days. The incident, which occurred on April 28 near Matunga, involved Pawar being injected with a poisonous substance by a group of robbers and drug addicts while he was on duty.

According to officials from the Dadar Government Railway Police (GRP), Pawar, in his twenties, was on his way to duty aboard a local train when the incident took place. As the train slowed down between Matunga and Sion stations around 9.30 pm, Pawar was assaulted by an individual standing near the tracks, causing his phone to fall. In an attempt to retrieve his phone, Pawar pursued the thief, only to be confronted by a gang of assailants who forcibly injected him with a poisonous substance and administered a red-colored liquid.

Subsequently, Pawar lost consciousness and was found the next morning, managing to return home before being admitted to a Thane hospital due to his deteriorating condition. The Kopri police station recorded his statement and initiated legal proceedings under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Despite medical intervention, Pawar’s condition worsened, leading to his untimely demise on Wednesday. The case, now under the jurisdiction of Dadar GRP, is undergoing further investigation, with efforts underway to add charges of murder to the existing case. Pawar, who joined the police department in 2015, is survived by his wife and parents, with funeral arrangements being made in his hometown of Chalisgaon, Jalgaon.

The cause of Pawar’s death remains undisclosed as authorities await medical reports. Senior Inspector Anil Kadam of Dadar GRP confirmed that Pawar’s body has been transported to his village for funeral rites.
