Mumbai: Water Main Burst Disrupts Supply to Eastern and Western Suburbs; Repairs Ongoing, Completion Expected by Sunday Evening

Mumbai, 3rd December 2023: A major water main burst near Seepz Gate No. 3 and Indian Oil Petrol Pump in Andheri East on Thursday has disrupted water supply to both eastern and western suburbs. The incident occurred during excavation for the Metro project. Repairs commenced on Saturday, but unexpected technical challenges have extended the completion timeline, now expected by Sunday evening.

The incident involved damage to one of the two 1800 mm diameter inlets of the Veravali Reservoir, impacting water supply to areas spanning from Bandra to Andheri, Jogeshwari in the western suburbs, and Kurla to Ghatkopar in the eastern suburbs. Temporary repairs were initiated immediately after the leakage was detected on November 30. However, comprehensive repair work began on Saturday at 8:30 am.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials noted that the repair work has faced complications due to the depth of the damaged aqueduct and multiple points of damage. The high water pressure within the aqueduct requires a substantial pumping effort to empty it. Additionally, challenges arise from the soil conditions near the water channel, contributing to obstacles in the repair process.

Although the BMC had initially projected completion by Sunday morning, the ongoing technical challenges have extended the timeline. The BMC authorities assure residents that once repairs are finalized, water pressure will be gradually restored to the affected sections. Residents in the impacted areas are advised to brace for a few more hours without a water supply until the repair work is successfully concluded by Sunday evening.
