Pune: 5-Year-Old Girl Killed in Leopard Attack While Sleeping in Cattle Shed in Shirur
Shirur, 22nd July 2026: A five-year-old girl was killed after a leopard allegedly attacker her while she was sleeping in a cattle shed in Pune district’s Shirur taluka in the early hours of Wednesday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Bhagyashree Sandeep Ware (5), originally from Karodi village in Pathardi taluka of Ahilyanagar district. Her family was currently residing at Pimpalsuti village in Shirur taluka.
According to the accidental death report registered at Shirur police station, the incident took place around 2.40 am on Wednesday.
The girl’s uncle, Babasaheb Kondiba Ware (36), told police that the family was sleeping in the cattle shed of their employer, Machhindra Pralhad Bhosale, when he was awakened by a noise. On waking up, he saw a leopard carrying away his niece.
The family raised an alarm and shouted in an attempt to scare away the animal. However, the leopard entered a nearby sugarcane field with the child.
The incident was immediately reported to their employer, who alerted the forest department and local villagers. After forest officials arrived, a search operation was launched and the girl was found.
She was rushed by ambulance to the Rural Hospital at Nhavare, where doctors examined her and declared her dead before treatment.
Shirur police have registered an accidental death report, and further legal formalities are underway. Forest department officials are also investigating the leopard attack.
