Vashi-Mumbai Flyover Inauguration Delayed Despite Completion, Traffic Chaos Continues

Navi Mumbai, 7th May 2025: The much-awaited third Vashi creek flyover, connecting Vashi to Mumbai, remains unopened despite construction being complete. While the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and officials hinted at an inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi via a virtual system, the actual opening has stalled, creating massive traffic snarls.
Construction on the Mumbai-bound flyover was completed weeks ago by L&T, and the route towards Mankhurd and Navi Mumbai is already open and functioning smoothly. However, vehicles heading from Vashi to Mumbai continue to face severe congestion due to the flyover not being operational.
After the government waived toll charges, traffic volumes at the Vashi toll plaza have surged. Currently, 11 lanes of traffic are being squeezed into just 2 lanes, leading to long delays. Motorists are frustrated, and tempers are flaring, especially in the summer heat.
Police Inspector Dilip Gujar from the Vashi Traffic Control Room said, “The flyover is ready, but not opened. Our traffic police are bearing the public’s anger daily.”
The delay has left many questioning the reason behind the holdup. Despite confirmation from MSRDC that the work is finished and the road is fit for traffic, no clear date has been given for the opening. MP Naresh Mhaske stated that the matter is being discussed with the Deputy Chief Minister and efforts are ongoing to resolve the issue quickly.
The first Vashi creek bridge opened in 1971 and the second in 1995. The third bridge promises six lanes for smoother travel but remains unused, adding to the daily struggle of commuters.
Until the inauguration is cleared, citizens and traffic officials will continue to battle worsening traffic and confusion on this key route.
