Wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic Future Uncertain Amid Rule Violation Controversy

Pune, 13th March 2024: Indian veteran wrestler Vinesh Phogat faces a new challenge as she conducts selection tests in two weight groups on the same day, a violation of the rules set by the United World Wrestling (UWW). The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has officially reported this matter to the global governing body. Vinesh’s participation in the Olympics is now in limbo, pending a decision from the UWW.

Vinesh surprised officials on Monday by attempting the test in both the 50 kg and 53 kg weight categories, leading to a delay in the selection process. Despite UWW’s Rule 7 prohibiting a wrestler from being tested in two weight groups on the same day, Vinesh proceeded against this regulation. Late on Monday night, interim committee chairman Bhupendra Singh Bajwa acknowledged using his authority to permit Vinesh to compete in both weight groups. Subsequently, WFI promptly informed UWW about this breach. WFI clarified that they were not involved in or supportive of Vinesh’s actions, leading to confusion within the Indian team structure.

Originally, it was agreed that the seasonal committee would conduct the tests, and the team selection would be handled by WFI. However, since WFI declined to take responsibility for the women’s 50 kg and 53 kg tests, the outcome now hinges on UWW’s decision. Despite losing in the 53 kg weight category during the trial, Vinesh emerged victorious in the 50 kg category.
