14-Storey Parking Lot Collapse in Mumbai Amid Dust Storm and Rain
Mumbai, 14th May 2024: On Monday, May 13, Mumbai experienced a tumultuous weather event as a dust storm, accompanied by rains in various locations, swept through the city. The eastern suburb of Wadala-Antop Hill road, in particular, bore the brunt of the havoc near Barkat Ali Naka and Shri G Tower.
A distressing incident unfolded as a 14-storey under-construction metal parking lot collapsed, captured on video, causing damage to over 30-50 cars caught in the wreckage. Responding swiftly, two fire engines and a rescue van were dispatched to the scene to assist.
Before this, Mumbai and neighbouring Thane district had witnessed light showers and dust storms. However, the intensity of the dust storm escalated, leading to the collapse of a large hoarding in Ghatkopar near a petrol pump station. This unfortunate event resulted in injuries to seven individuals, who were promptly admitted to Rajawadi Hospital. The incident occurred at the Police Ground Petrol Pump, Eastern Express Highway, Pantnagar in Ghatkopar East.
The gusty winds, coupled with unseasonal rain, caused widespread disruptions across Mumbai, including the uprooting of numerous trees in various areas. Traffic on roads and local train operations were significantly affected, with reports of waterlogging exacerbating the situation. Additionally, flights were impacted by the adverse weather conditions.
