Dip in Tourists at Byculla Zoo Amid Lack of New Animals

Mumbai, 18th May 2025: The Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Garden and Zoo in Byculla, popularly known as Rani Baug, has seen a noticeable decline in tourist footfall over the past year, largely due to the absence of new animal attractions. Zoo officials say efforts to bring in animals like lions and zebras have stalled due to regulatory hurdles and import restrictions.

In 2022–23, the zoo recorded a record-breaking 29.56 lakh visitors, generating revenue of ₹11.59 crore. However, in 2024–25, that number dropped to 23.57 lakh visitors with earnings of ₹9.18 crore. This decline follows a post-pandemic surge in footfall, when tourists flocked to the zoo after lockdowns lifted.

Monthly data also shows a downward trend. In April 2025, the zoo recorded 2.39 lakh visitors and ₹93 lakh in revenue. As of May 15, only 1.55 lakh visitors had been recorded, earning ₹59.66 lakh.

Currently, the zoo houses 21 penguins, two tigers (Shakti and Charisma), elephants, monkeys, deer, bears, pythons, and 157 birds across 19 species. The botanical section contains over 6,600 trees and 283 plant species. Waterfowl like cormorants, storks, and hawks are also present.

According to a senior civic official, the zoo cannot add foreign species without first increasing its collection of native animals, as per Central Zoo Authority guidelines. Plans are underway to build an aquarium to pave the way for future exotic additions.

Despite a 2017 hike in entry fees (₹50 for adults, ₹25 for children), the decline in new attractions appears to be affecting visitor interest.
