Mumbai Advertising Firm’s Server Hacked, Rs 4.25 Lakh Ransom Demanded in Bitcoin

Mumbai, 23rd May 2025: In a fresh blow to India’s rising cyber threat landscape, a server belonging to an advertising company based at LBS Marg in Kurla was hacked, with sensitive data stolen and a ransom demand of ₹4.25 lakh in Bitcoin issued by cybercriminals.
The incident came to light when employees of the company were unable to access the system. Attempts to reset the password failed to recover data. Instead, a Word file was found on the server containing a chilling ransom note. The message stated that the company’s Network Attached Storage (NAS) had been breached, all files encrypted, and important data downloaded. A Bitcoin payment link was provided along with an email ID for communication.
The hackers demanded a one-time payment in Bitcoin and even offered future cybersecurity “guidance” if the ransom was paid. The message warned: “You have to pay the amount in Bitcoin only once. Otherwise forget the data.”
Following the incident, the company filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police’s Central Region Cyber Cell. A case has been registered under sections 65, 66, 43(a), 43(f) of the Information Technology Act and section 308(2) of the Indian Penal Code.
This attack coincides with a reported surge in cyberattacks across India, especially after the recent Pahalgam terror attack. Over one million cyberattacks have reportedly occurred since then, prompting the Civil Defence Department to issue urgent advisories. Companies have been instructed to implement robust data backup protocols and enhance their cybersecurity frameworks.
Authorities are investigating the breach, but the identity of the hackers remains unknown. The case serves as a stark reminder for businesses to invest in digital security amid escalating cyber threats.
