Illegal Structures Demolished Near Mankhurd Juvenile Home, Railway Station in Major Crackdown
Mumbai, 23rd May 2025: In a major anti-encroachment drive, the Public Works Department (PWD) on Friday demolished over 50 unauthorized shops, hotels, and godowns near Mankhurd Railway Station and the Mankhurd Juvenile Home, following years of unchecked illegal construction.
The operation began around 9 a.m. and targeted structures that had sprung up illegally along the Sion-Panvel Highway. These included unauthorized bars, wedding halls, garages, and commercial establishments operating on land belonging to the Children’s Aid Society and the PWD. Over the past few years, land mafia groups had reportedly encroached on more than 25 acres in the area.
Despite numerous complaints from locals and civic activists, no action had been taken until recently. A series of investigative reports published by Loksatta prompted authorities to act. Taking cognizance of the media coverage, the PWD initiated the demolition drive under heavy police security to prevent resistance from the encroachers.
As bulldozers moved in, tensions escalated, and the operation was met with significant opposition from those affected, including alleged members of the land mafia. However, the authorities carried out the demolition without interruption.
This crackdown marks a significant step in reclaiming public land and curbing illegal activities in the Mankhurd area. Officials have indicated that further actions will follow to prevent re-encroachment and ensure the area is used for its intended public welfare purposes.
The operation has been welcomed by local residents, many of whom had raised concerns about the safety, hygiene, and lawlessness associated with the encroachments.
