BMC Gears Up for Monsoon After Torrential Rain Disrupts Mumbai

Mumbai, 28th May 2025: Following recent torrential downpours that threw daily life in Mumbai into disarray, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified its monsoon readiness efforts. A high-level review meeting was convened on Wednesday by Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani at the BMC Headquarters to evaluate progress on monsoon-related preparations and implement key action plans.

During the meeting, Gagrani underlined the urgency of ensuring efficient water drainage, particularly in flood-prone, low-lying zones. He instructed that all city-wide pumping systems be operational on time and receive regular maintenance to avoid breakdowns. He also reinforced the deadline for drain desilting operations, urging that they be completed without delays.

Gagrani emphasised that once concrete roadworks are concluded, associated stormwater drains must undergo thorough cleaning. He further mandated an exhaustive audit to ensure that all drainage lines and manholes across the city are securely covered, minimising the risk of accidents and blockages.

Construction waste management was another focus, with clear directives to remove debris without delay. Additional personnel and machinery are to be deployed where required to fast-track incomplete works. Ward-level Deputy and Assistant Commissioners have been tasked with inspecting project sites twice daily, morning and evening, to maintain oversight and momentum.

Flood-prone locations will receive targeted interventions to avert waterlogging, while urgent repairs of potholes using advanced technology have been prioritised. Gagrani also emphasised bolstering emergency response mechanisms and ensuring prompt communication during rain-related emergencies.

The review was attended by Additional Municipal Commissioners Dr. Vipin Sharma and Abhijit Bangar, along with senior officials from the Roads, Drainage, Transport, and Disaster Management departments.
