CCTV Surveillance Emerges as Mumbai Police’s Most Trusted Digital Witness, Strengthening Criminal Investigations

Mumbai, 14th July 2026: Mumbai’s extensive CCTV surveillance network has become a crucial tool in criminal investigations, enabling police to trace suspects, reconstruct crime scenes, and present strong digital evidence in court. With thousands of cameras monitoring public spaces across the city, Mumbai Police are increasingly relying on CCTV footage to solve crimes quickly and efficiently.

According to officials, investigations in the city are no longer dependent solely on eyewitness accounts. Instead, digital surveillance has significantly improved the ability of investigators to track the movements of suspects, establish timelines, and gather reliable evidence.

Several high-profile cases this year have highlighted the importance of CCTV footage. In the Paydhuni poisoning case, investigators analysed surveillance footage from the surrounding area to determine the sequence of events and identify key leads.

Similarly, in the murder of 22-year-old Mayank aboard a Churchgate–Nalasopara local train, railway police examined more than 400 CCTV recordings from railway stations, platforms, and nearby roads to trace the accused. The suspect, Roshan Suvarna, was arrested from Panvel railway station within hours of the incident. The investigation also revealed that the knife allegedly used in the murder had been purchased online.

In the NESCO drug case in Goregaon, CCTV footage from the event venue, parking areas, and entry gates helped investigators identify the movement of suspects and their associates. Police further strengthened the investigation by combining the footage with mobile location data, WhatsApp chats, and other digital evidence.

Surveillance footage also played a decisive role in solving a murder and robbery case in Malabar Hill, where the accused was captured on multiple cameras while fleeing the crime scene. Police tracked and arrested the suspect within hours.

In another incident in Dahisar, CCTV footage enabled police to identify and arrest eight accused involved in an assault. Officials said surveillance cameras have also proved invaluable in investigations related to burglary, chain snatching, vehicle theft, and robbery.

Mumbai’s surveillance network covers several high-security and high-footfall locations, including Gateway of India, Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Nariman Point, Marine Drive, Kala Ghoda, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), major railway stations such as Dadar, Kurla, Andheri, Bandra, and Ghatkopar, Mumbai Airport, Mantralaya, the Bombay High Court, Mumbai Police Headquarters, religious landmarks including Siddhivinayak Temple, Haji Ali Dargah, and Mahalaxmi Temple, as well as Crawford Market, Zaveri Bazaar, Bhendi Bazaar, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), major flyovers, coastal roads, and key traffic junctions.

Officials said the expanding CCTV network continues to enhance public safety and has become one of the most effective tools in modern policing across Mumbai.
