Panvel: Sukapur Witnesses Bandh Against NAINA

Panvel, 13th February 2023: From rickshaw pullers to grocery vendors in Sukapur village of Panvel taluka, all sections observed a one-day trade strike against Naina (Navi Mumbai Airport notified area). The anti-Naina call given by the Bharatiya Shetkari Karmar Party and various social organizations has received a good response. At this time, the angry villagers put forward the stand that Naina Hatav should not be removed. On Sundays, a large amount of buying and selling takes place in the market of Sukapur. But the businesses are closed for the whole day on Sunday.

Shekap has currently undertaken a multi-pronged program called ‘Naina Hatav, Project-affected Rescue’. Balaram Patil is leading this movement. Internal business closure will be observed in various villages for the next 23 days. In Sukapur village, the villagers enthusiastically observed the bandh except for essential services on Sunday. In the same Sukapur village, a child died due to the collapse of a dangerous building due to Naina’s stalled policy. On behalf of the government, Balaram Patil, Prashant Thakur, and Leader of Opposition Ajit Pawar raised questions in the session on December 30. Guardian Minister Uday Samant also replied that he will decide on the policy and hold a meeting of MLAs, the Airport Authority, the CIDCO Board, and the Naina Authority. However, half a month has passed, and no action has been taken.

The Shekap and 95 Village Project Affected Struggle Committee has demanded that Naina should be planned under the UDCPR Act instead of Naina as the authority has been able to work according to planning in the last nine and a half years. In Panvel taluka, various authorities like MMRDA, Panvel Municipality, and CIDCO Corporation have been given the powers of planning authority by the government. Therefore, due to the development of the Naina area, 3 additional mat areas in the municipal area, 4 in MMRDA and 60 per cent of the land in Naina will be given to the farmers as the remaining 40 per cent of the land will be given by the Naina Authority and 23 villagers have taken the role of Naina Hatav.
