Thane: Two Chain Snatchers Arrested, Sentenced To 10 Years Of Imprisonment

Thane, 28th February 2023: A special (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act) MCOCA court in Thane sentenced two chain thieves from an Irani settlement in Kalyan to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs five lakh. In case of non-payment of the fine, the special MCOCA court judge A M Shete ordered three more years of imprisonment.
The names of the convicted accused are Aziz Abbas alias Jafar Syed Jafri (20) and Jafar Azam Syed (28). On behalf of the government party, Adv. Sanjay More explained that Asha Patil (29) and her husband were going by rickshaw to see a sick relative. Two people came on a bike and told Asha Patil not to go ahead as there had been a murder and left. Another bike followed. The person on the second bike slapped Asha’s neck hard, snatched the gold mangalsutra worth Rs 71 thousand from her neck, and fled towards Kalyan. As the husband and wife screamed, the rickshaw driver turned the rickshaw towards the thieves. Both of them fell from the bike on the road. Pedestrians caught them and handed them over to the Crime Branch police.
They said their names were Aziz Abbas and Jafar Azam. They live in an Irani settlement near Ambivali. The arrested accused informed the police that Tawfiq Irani and Abbas Irani had escaped. A case was registered at Kolsewadi police station in this regard.
As the accused were organized criminals, they were booked under the Organized Crime Act. Thane MCOCA Court examined 13 witnesses. The accused were found guilty. As the court did not prove all the charges against the accused, they were sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
