Mumbai: Heavy Rains Bring Relief To Mumbai As Four Out Of Seven Dams Overflow In The city

Mumbai, 27th July 2023: In the wake of continuous heavy rains lashing many districts of the state, Mumbai and its surrounding areas have also been experiencing a good amount of rainfall for the past few days. As many parts of the city have still been grappling with the water shortage, there is finally a glimmer of good news for Mumbaikars. One more dam out of seven supplying water to Mumbai overflowed yesterday. This is the fourth dam in continuation of the last three that have overflowed to this date.

The incessant rainfall in recent days has significantly increased the inflow of water into the dams that cater to Mumbai’s water needs. As a result, several rivers in the city started overflowing. Meanwhile, four out of the seven dams that quench Mumbai’s thirst are now brimming with water.

Announcing via Twitter, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation informed residents about the overflow of the Modak Sagar yesterday. “Among the 7 dams that supply water to Mumbai, Modak Sagar dam started overflowing today (July 27, 2023) at 10:52 PM,” tweeted BMC. In response to the dam’s overflow, authorities have opened two gates to manage the excess water effectively. This has led to a controlled release of water from the dam at a rate of 6,000 cusecs.

The total maximum water storage capacity of the seven dams supplying water to the city of Mumbai is about 1,44,736.3 crore litres (14,47,363 million litres). Meanwhile, Tulsi Lake has been overflowing since July 20, while Vihar and Tansa Lakes have started overflowing since Wednesday morning. After this, Modak Sagar Dam also overflowed yesterday.
