Alphonso Mango Supply Surges in Konkan Region, Prices Drop

Pune, 16th March 2024: The Konkan region is experiencing a remarkable surge in Alphonso mango supplies this summer, with estimates suggesting a spike of nearly 35% compared to the previous year. Mango growers and retailers have noted this abundance, which has led to a significant drop in prices.

Retail prices have dipped to approximately Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 a dozen, down from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500 a dozen during the same period last year.

A wholesaler in Market Yard attributed the drop in prices to low demand. “With reduced demand, wholesale prices have significantly decreased. A dozen Alphonso mangoes in wholesale markets are being sold at Rs 500 to Rs 1,000.”

However, the situation is starkly different for the Lucknowi Dussehri variety of mangoes. Low temperatures and rain spells in mango belts of Uttar Pradesh have resulted in a 70% reduction in flowering.

Insram Ali, president of the All India Mango Growers Association, expressed concerns about the impact on Lucknowi Dussehri production. “Parts of mango-growing regions in UP have witnessed only about 20% to 30% flowering so far, potentially affecting production,” Ali explained. “Furthermore, the issue of duplicate pesticides remains unaddressed by the government, posing further challenges.”
