Assault on Duty: Thane Witnesses Two Separate Incidents of Motorists Attacking Police

Thane, 28th February 2024: In separate incidents in Thane and Mumbra, two motorists have been booked for allegedly assaulting traffic police personnel while they were carrying out their duties on the road.

The first incident took place at Cadbury junction on the Eastern Express Highway, where a biker assaulted a police officer attempting to apprehend him for violating traffic rules. The officer, an assistant sub-inspector, intercepted the biker who had jumped a signal. The accused, who had an outstanding penalty of Rs 1,000, verbally abused and repeatedly punched the officer, causing shoulder injuries.

In the second incident in Mumbra, a biker allegedly attacked the staff of a towing van, smashing its windscreen, after they picked up his bike parked in a restricted zone. The confrontation escalated as the man questioned the towing van staff and police personnel, leading to the violent outburst captured in a viral video. Dr Vinay Kumar Rathod, Deputy Police Commissioner of Traffic, confirmed the incidents and stated that complaints have been registered against the involved motorists.

These incidents follow a series of attacks on police officers in the region, including the assault of a traffic constable by a drunken individual in March 2022 and the arrest of a 27-year-old man in September 2023 for attacking and injuring four policemen near Mankoli Naka.
