Bombay High Court Restricts Diwali Firecrackers in Mumbai: Only 8-10 pm Window Allowed

Mumbai, 10th November 2023: In a significant decision, the Bombay High Court has granted permission for the bursting of firecrackers in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) area, only between 8 and 10 pm during Diwali. The court emphasized the need to prevent Mumbai from facing the severe pollution issues observed in Delhi.

Additionally, the ban on transporting garbage from construction sites has been extended until November 19, rejecting the municipal corporation’s request to lift the ban. The court emphasized strict enforcement of pollution reduction rules announced by the Municipal Corporation in March 2023.

To investigate the specific causes behind air pollution, the High Court has appointed a committee tasked with submitting weekly reports. The committee will monitor daily progress reports from all municipalities and planning systems in the MMR area.

The court stressed the urgency for collaborative efforts among authorities to address the worsening air quality situation. Acknowledging good intentions on paper, the court noted the challenge lies in the inadequate implementation of action plans and guidelines, leading to poor air quality.
