Harbour Line Gets Its First Metro: Trial Run Begins on Metro Line 2B

Mumbai, 16th April 2025: The Harbour Line has received its first metro service as the trial run for Mumbai Metro Line 2B began on Wednesday. The trial is being carried out on a 5.5-kilometre stretch between Mandala in Mankhurd and Diamond Garden in Chembur.
This is a big step toward improving public transport in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs. The new metro line will help reduce traffic and give people a faster and smoother way to travel. If the tests go well and get safety approvals, the metro could be ready for public use by December, MMRDA officials said.
This stretch includes five stations: Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL, Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden. Most of the construction work on this part of the metro is already done.
Metro Line 2B is part of a larger 23.6-kilometre route that will eventually connect D N Nagar in Andheri to Mandale in Mankhurd. Once the full line is ready, it will connect the eastern and western parts of Mumbai. It will also link up with other metro lines, the monorail, and major roads, making it easier for people to travel across the city.
This is the first time a metro line is being introduced on the Harbour Line, which mainly serves the eastern side of the city. The new metro is expected to save time for daily commuters and reduce the pressure on local train and Service Roads.
The project is being handled by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is leading efforts to expand Mumbai’s metro network.
