IIT Bombay Recruitment Exam Cheating: Four Candidates Arrested for Allegedly Using Mobile Phones

Mumbai, 11th August 2026: Four candidates were arrested by Powai Police for allegedly using mobile phones and other devices to cheat during a recruitment examination held at a Kendriya Vidyalaya on the IIT Bombay campus.

The examination was conducted by the Central Sanskrit University for the recruitment of peons. The alleged malpractice came to light when an invigilator noticed the suspicious behaviour of a candidate appearing for the examination in Room No. 69.

According to police, the invigilator searched the candidate and found a mobile phone concealed in his trouser pocket. Following the discovery, the examination centre was thoroughly checked, during which three other candidates were allegedly found to be involved in the malpractice.

Powai Police subsequently arrested all four candidates and seized mobile phones and other equipment allegedly used for cheating. The police are investigating whether the candidates were working together and how they managed to bypass the security checks at the examination centre.

One of the devices seized during the investigation was reportedly a small handset measuring around 2.5 inches. The device had limited calling functionality and was reportedly made using separate components. Police said the handset, which was worth around ₹700, did not contain any data during the preliminary examination.

The incident has raised questions about the security arrangements at the examination centre and how candidates managed to carry electronic devices inside the venue despite the screening process.

Powai Police are conducting further investigation into the case.
