IPS Officer Vivek Phansalkar Is New Police Commissioner of Mumbai
Mumbai, 30th June 2022: Before resigning from the post of Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray appointed senior IPS officer Vivek Phansalkar as the new police commissioner of Mumbai.
Phansalkar, a 1989 batch IPS officer, was serving as the Director General and MD of Police Housing and Welfare Corporation before his appointment as the Mumbai Police Commissioner.
He will replace the present police commissioner Sanjay Pandey who is retiring today.
According to an official, Mumbai Police has strengthened up the security around the Vidhan Bhavan and on the route through which the rebel Shiv Sena MLAs will pass after leaving the airport.
Police have invoked Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) which prohibits the assembly of five or more persons near Vidhan Bhawan and adjoining areas in South Mumbai.
The official said, “Police and traffic branch officials are on alert as Shiv Sena supporters are expected to protest when the rebel MLAs reach Vidhan Bhavan.”
“Though no official information has been received so far about the plans of Shiv Sena supporters, a green corridor may be made for the movement of buses of the rebel MLAs,” he said.
