Karnataka Masjid Controversy: Section 144 Imposed In Srirangapatna City Due To Modque Dispute, Heavy Police Force Deployed
Karnataka, 4th June 2022: Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Court (CrPC) has been imposed in Srirangapatna town of Mandya district of Karnataka. This will be applicable from 6 am to 6 pm on Saturday. This step has been taken in view of today’s call of ‘Srirangapatna Chalo’ by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
In view of the call of VHP, more than 500 policemen have been deployed. Four check posts have been set up. Route march was also taken out in the presence of SP N Yatish
According to Dy Commissioner Aswathi, the setting up of weekly market is postponed (usually held on Saturday), liquor sale is banned in 5 kms limits of Srirangapatna today. The Masjid road is closed, people are not allowed in the masjid today, CCTV cameras are installed, special team formed to look after suspicious movements.
The deputy commissioner said, ‘Today the Masjid road has been closed. People are not allowed to enter the mosque. CCTV cameras have been installed to deal with any untoward incident. A special team has been formed to keep an eye on suspicious activities.”
Mandya SP said that rallies/processions/protests are not allowed in Srirangapatna Nagar Panchayat limits due to prohibitory orders imposed by the taluka administration. Keeping this order in mind, we have ensured adequate arrangements in and around the town so that no untoward incident takes place.
He said that the city is completely calm now. It will remain the same in the coming days as well. “We have made necessary arrangements. We have deployed our jawans, spoke to the leaders and informed them about the imposition of prohibitory orders. If any violation is done, legal action will be taken against them,” he added.
A dispute has started regarding the Jamia Masjid at Srirangapatna in Mandya district. Hindu organizations claim that the mosque has been built on the ruins of a Hanuman temple. They also talked about approaching the court in this matter.
Hindu organizations also submitted a memorandum to Mandya Deputy Commissioner Ashwathi S and demanded a survey of the mosque.
